MDA Resource Center: We’re Here For You
Our trained specialists are here to provide one-on-one support for every part of your journey. Send a message below or call us at 1-833-ASK-MDA1 (1-833-275-6321). If you live outside the U.S., we may be able to connect you to muscular dystrophy groups in your area, but MDA programs are only available in the U.S.
Remote assessments for Myotonic Dystrophy
DM1 is a common rare disease with ~140 000 people affected in the US. However, only a fraction of the DM community is able to participate in research. Barriers to research participation at on-site research study visits include geographic dispersion with long distances to DM centers, or limitations related to mobility, caregiver responsibilities, or socioeconomic factors. Remote study visits, including connection with participants via video conferencing and quantified assessents of strength and function using a toolkit with devices, are feasible in DM1 and provide an opoortunity to overcome barriers to research participation. This approach offers the opportunity to study larger cohorts at less cost and burden. Remote assessments may also supplement on-site study visits in clnical trials, increasing the number of evaluations of drug effects. However, the method requires further validation. In this proposal, subjects with DM1 will participate in remote and on-site study visits. The agreement between measurents obtained at remote and on-site study visit will be assessed. If measures are comparable, these methods may be incorporated into future clinical trials or comparative effectiveness studies.
