MDA and Magic Wheelchair are nonprofit organizations jointly committed to empowering people living with neuromuscular diseases and disabilities and have collaborated for many years. Historic collaborations have included costumes at MDA Muscle Walk events, and then the costume reveal in 2020 for alumni MDA National Ambassador, Ethan LyBrand. In 2020, they launched a collaborative Instagram sweepstakes. Previous costume reveals have included a digger truck for Mason, a Ghostbusters costume for Carter, a fire truck for Jose, a Rapunzel costume for Anna, and a Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine for Katherine.

“It’s inspiring to see how this collaboration sparks joy and brings our MDA families together in such a unique way. The Halloween season is not only about creativity but also about celebrating the strength and individuality of the people we serve. We're honored to present opportunities to generate momentum around access and inclusion, and to amplify the voices of people who deserve to feel seen, valued, and celebrated,” said Morgan Roth, Chief Marketing Officer, Muscular Dystrophy Association.

“Every Magic Wheelchair we create reflects the recipient and empowers their voice, from their favorite color, character, or vehicle; They are the bosses. Our volunteer builders put their hearts into making these dream costumes come to life, and now with our new Magic Wheelchair Makerspace, we’re able to collaborate with families in even more meaningful ways. This partnership with the Muscular Dystrophy Association is about more than just costumes—it's about empowerment, community, and giving families unforgettable memories," said Christine Getman, Executive Director, Magic Wheelchair.

“Halloween is a magical time for self-expression, and through this partnership with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, we are creating memorable experiences that highlight the creativity and strength of children living with neuromuscular diseases. The costumes are a way for these kids to express their passions, while also showing the world that their voices matter. It's an honor to be part of a movement that celebrates individuality and promotes inclusion,” said Scottie Foertmeyer, Director of Community Outreach, Magic Wheelchair.

Read about the reveal from a previous winner, Anna, in MDA’s Quest blog here. “I love the Tangled movie and the series on Disney Plus,” Anna said. “I wanted a tower just like the one that Rapunzel lived in. Rapunzel is awesome because she has long magic hair that can heal and save people.” Anna’s mother Kathleen said, “She likes the idea of thanking the people that make MDA Summer Camp possible for her and her friends. As for my husband and I, we are happy to do all that we can to help spread MDA’s message because the research that the association helps to advance and the positive experiences, like Summer Camp and Magic Wheelchair, really do make a difference in our daughter’s life and we are thankful.”

MDA is grateful for the support of this collaboration with Magic Wheelchair, from leading longtime partners including the International Association of Fire Fighters, CITGO Petroleum Corporation, National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), and more.
