'The Best Week of the Year'

Since 1955, MDA has built bridges and knocked down barriers for youngsters with muscular dystrophy and related neuromuscular diseases by providing an unforgettable week at MDA summer camp.

Each year, MDA sponsors nearly 80 summer camps across the country. Whether in Alaska, Hawaii, California or New York, barriers simply don’t exist. A child with a disability can just be a child among friends. Youngsters attend summer camp at no cost to their families.

MDA camp is a magical place offering a wide range of activities specially designed for youngsters who have limited mobility or use wheelchairs. Although structured, camp programs are conducted in a relaxed atmosphere that gives campers an unmatched opportunity to develop lifelong friendships, share interests and build self-confidence.

MDA summer camp activities may include:

  • swimming
  • karaoke
  • boating and canoeing
  • fishing
  • adaptive sports
  • archery
  • horseback riding
  • scavenger hunts
  • arts and crafts
  • spirit competitions
  • dances and talent shows
  • campfires
  • carnival

Be a camp volunteer!

If you’re 16 or older, you’re invited to apply to join the MDA team as a camp volunteer. At most MDA camps, volunteer counselors work one-on-one with campers around the clock providing the care, close supervision and attention children with muscular dystrophy need. Counselors push wheelchairs, meet the daily needs of each child and become a youngster’s friend for a week. MDA camps are especially in need of male camp volunteers; female volunteers also are needed.

You can make a difference in the life of a child as a:

  • volunteer counselor
  • volunteer medical staff
  • volunteer water safety instructor
  • volunteer activity/program coordinator
  • volunteer assisting with pre-camp planning

How can I become a volunteer?

  • Complete a volunteer application through your local MDA office
  • Submit three letters of reference
  • Complete a criminal background check
  • Interview with MDA staff

Be a camp sponsor!

By becoming an MDA summer camp sponsor, your organization can provide a local youngster with many special summer memories. The cost of sending one child to MDA camp for one week is $800.

As a sponsor, your business or organization will be invited to visit the local MDA camp during our special sponsor VIP Day. You’ll see the joy that your participation in this program creates. Your involvement also will be saluted on the local broadcast of the MDA Labor Day Telethon. Be a sponsor and help youngsters with muscular dystrophy in your community experience a week of fun and friendship they’ll never forget!

You can make a difference by sponsoring:

  •   a child’s week at camp
  •   a cabin of campers
  •   an activity
  •   a special camp meal
  •   equipment and supplies needed for the camp week
