1999 JERRY LEWIS MDA TELETHON

WHO: Jerry Lewis, MDA national chairman and number-one volunteer, with hundreds of entertainers, sports celebrities, and nearly a million volunteers nationwide, including thousands of business and civic leaders from communities across America.

Returning are Ed McMahon, Telethon anchor; Walter Anderson, Jann Carl, Cynthia Garrett as Telethon co-hosts. Stars performing, making appeals or cameo appearances include: Jason Alexander, Brandy, Mariah Carey, Carrot Top, Cher, Norm Crosby, Sheryl Crow, Laura Dern, David James Elliott, Whitney Houston, Judge Judy, Larry King, Cyndi Lauper, Lucy Lawless, Bill Maher, Maureen McGovern, Tom Petty, LeAnn Rimes, General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, Diane Schuur, Martin Short, Kevin Sorbo, Martha Stewart, Pam Tillis, Alex Trebek, Tina Turner, Shania Twain, and Christopher Walken.

WHAT: 34th annual Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon, to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association

  • Nonstop 21½-hour variety show, with round-the-clock entertainment by stars from Hollywood to Broadway and performances by international recording artists
  • Personality profiles on extraordinary individuals and families assisted by MDA's unparalleled research and patient services programs
  • Augmented by more than 1,000 fund-raising events for "Jerry's kids" taking place Labor Day weekend in grassroots communities across America

WHEN: Airing from 9 p.m. EDT Sunday, Sept. 5, to 6:30 p.m. EDT Monday, Sept. 6, 1999

WHERE: Originating from CBS Television City, Hollywood, with satellite feeds and taped segments from New York, Chicago, Las Vegas and more

  • Broadcast by some 200 television stations, the Telethon reaches some 75 million viewers in the United States and Canada
  • The world's first live multilingual Webcast (streaming video programming in English, Spanish and Japanese at www.mda.org)
  • Festivities and other events benefiting MDA in parks, on beaches, in malls, at stadiums, bowling alleys and golf courses

WHY: To exceed the 1998 Telethon total of $51.6 million which supports MDA programs including worldwide research, comprehensive medical and community services and far-reaching professional and public health education
