JERRY LEWIS MDA LABOR DAY
TELETHON HAPPY TO BE ‘BACK IN VEGAS!’
TUCSON, Ariz., August 7, 2007 — When the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon is broadcast from Las Vegas this year, the legendary comedian, actor and producer won’t have far to travel.
The “entertainment capital of the world” is Lewis’ long-time residence, and he made no secret of his love for it. “We’re back in Vegas!’” he exulted. “What can I say -- it’s just a great city with great people. It’s the best location we could ask for to send out MDA’s message of hope.”
Doing the honors for the second year as the Telethon’s host facility is the new South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa, whose 22,000-square-foot ballroom will be the prime venue for the live 21½-hour broadcast.
MDA’s “Love Network” of 190 television stations around the United States will relay the show to more than 40 million viewers in the United States and Canada. Real Networks, on the Internet at www.mda.org, will take the show to many more around the globe.
This will be the 42nd consecutive Telethon for which the veteran entertainer and national chairman of the Muscular Dystrophy Association has served as star of the show. Lewis will be joined by Telethon anchor Ed McMahon (who celebrates 40 years as Lewis’ Telethon sidekick), and other celebrities who combine talents to make the marathon fund-raising event a success.
High profile Telethon co-hosts this year include Jann Carl of “Entertainment Tonight,” country singer Billy Gilman, Tom Bergeron of “Dancing with the Stars” and “America’s Funniest Videos” and Alison Sweeney of “Days of our Lives” and “The Biggest Loser.”
The show airs from 9 p.m. ET on Sept. 2 to 6:30 p.m. Sept 3. Broadcast times may vary nationally, so viewers should check local listings.
The Mediterranean-themed South Point features 1,350 luxury rooms, seven restaurants, a world-class spa, movie complex, bowling center, equestrian events facility and multiple conference options. It’s located on 60 acres south of the famed Las Vegas Strip.
“We’re very honored that Jerry and MDA have again selected us as the point of origin for the Telethon,” South Point President Michael Gaughan said. “We’re delighted to welcome the entire Telethon production team and the wonderful families MDA serves. We have a role to play in helping find treatments and cures for ‘Jerry’s kids,’ and we’re committed to it.”
MDA is a voluntary health agency working to defeat more than 40 neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services and far-reaching professional and public health education. The Association’s programs are funded almost entirely by individual private contributors. |
