MDA RELEASES NEW BOOK FOR
PEOPLE LIVING WITH ALS
TUCSON, Ariz., May 13, 2005 – The Muscular Dystrophy Association
has published a new, comprehensive guide for people who are living
with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS,
or Lou Gehrig’s disease).
“Everyday Life With ALS: A Practical Guide” addresses
the unique lifestyle and health issues that accompany an ALS diagnosis.
The 150-page book serves as a replacement for MDA’s out-of-print
guide titled “ALS: Maintaining Mobility.”
ALS is a progressive motor neuron disease characterized by generalized
weakness and muscle wasting. It usually leads to virtually complete
paralysis, and has a three-to-five-year average survival.
In a positive tone, “Everyday Life With ALS” offers sensible
solutions to the challenges common in ALS. At the same time, it presents
a realistic view of the dramatic changes that ALS can cause, such
as complete loss of mobility and/or speech.
“It’s hard to imagine a diagnosis that’s more devastating
than ALS,” MDA President and CEO Robert Ross said. “This
MDA book gives readers the real answers they’ll need to maintain
the highest quality of life while facing this disease. We’re
proud to add “Everyday Life With ALS” to our arsenal in
MDA’s battle against ALS.”
The book was created by MDA’s Publications Department with the
input of ALS experts and health care professionals, and contains a
preface by noted neurologist Valerie Cwik, MDA’s Medical Director.
The book has chapters on equipment for daily living, home modifications,
respiratory issues, mobility equipment, exercise and more. It includes
photos of assistive equipment, explanatory graphics, and a list of
resources specific to ALS and the needs of people with disabilities.
The May release of the book coincides with ALS
Awareness Month, the 14th annual nationwide tribute that honors
the fighting spirits of those affected by ALS, while educating the
public about this deadly disease.
“Everyday Life With ALS: A Practical Guide” is available
to the public for $15 in book form, and $10 for a CD-ROM. Both can
be ordered from MDA’s Publications Department: (520) 529-2000,
ext. 6299, or publications@mdausa.org.
MDA is the world leader among voluntary agencies fighting ALS, and
has invested more than $170 million in its ALS program to date. MDA’s
ALS Division offers the most comprehensive range of health care services
at its nationwide network of clinics, and leads the search for a treatment
or cure with its worldwide research program.
