Muscular dystrophy and related muscle weakening diseases, especially those that progress in severity, can damage muscles involved with breathing. Catching the flu is particularly hazardous for those with muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease). As a result, flu shots are considered a vital part of medically managing these disorders. With this in mind, MDA includes flu inoculations among the many important services provided to those served by the Association.
