Mito. Myopathy — Antoni Barrientos, Ph.D.

MDA has awarded a research grant totaling $346,500 over three years to Antoni Barrientos, an associate professor in the departments of neurology and biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Miami (Florida) Miller School of Medicine. The grant will help support Barrientos' study of the underlying molecular mechanisms in some forms of mitochondrial myopathy.

MDA Commits $12 Million to Neuromuscular Disease Research

The Muscular Dystrophy Association has awarded 38 new grants totaling more than $12 million to fund research projects focused on its continuing mission to uncover the causes of, and develop therapies for, the more than 40 neuromuscular diseases in its program.

MDA's Board of Directors reviewed and approved the new grants based on recommendations from the Association's Scientific and Medical Advisory Committees, and the grants took effect Feb. 1.

Mito. Myopathy - Salvatore DiMauro, M.D.

MDA awarded a research grant totaling $272,974 over a period of two years to Salvatore DiMauro, the Lucy G. Moses Professor of Neurology at Columbia University Medical Center in New York. The funds will help support DiMauro’s research into developing a therapy designed to treat neutral lipid storage disease with myopathy (NLSDM), a mitochondrial myopathy.

MDA Awards $13.7 Million in Research Grants

The Muscular Dystrophy Association has awarded 40 research grants totaling $13.7 million to advance the understanding of disease processes and uncover new strategies for treatments and cures of muscular dystrophy and the more than 40 other diseases in the Association's program.

The new grants were recommended by MDA's Scientific and Medical Advisory Committees and approved by MDA's Board of Directors at its July 2011 meeting.

Jean Watson

Jean was a member of the Duluth Art Institute and the Very Special Arts in Minnesota. She studied at the Minneapolis Art Institute. Her work has been exhibited at the Art Institute member shows and the Sister Kenny Institute International Art Shows where she received a Best in Show in 1991. “Shelter” represented to Jean our long-ago ancestors resting from their food harvesting.
