Welcome to the FSHD Chat
I am having a problem getting my message to show. Are you having that problem?
Hi Jim How are you tonight?
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 8:49:55 PM)
Okay, I pressed the "send message" button on the right lower part of the screen and it worked
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 8:50:57 PM)
Thought for the night: The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing, but also to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.

gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 8:54:38 PM)
(This user has entered FSHD Chat)
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 8:55:11 PM)
The anchor is the one that always comes up but you can change it by going to settings and choosing and saving an icon of your choice
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 8:55:27 PM)
Hello Gypsy. Welcome back. I have been missing you
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 8:55:30 PM)
Dr. says mild case - unable to teach school now, going up 1 flight of stairs is hard
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 8:55:36 PM)
hi froglady
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 8:55:58 PM)
hi ahfh
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 8:56:07 PM)
Hi gypsy -I'm new
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 8:56:18 PM)
Ahfh3, if you can't walk up a flight of stairs easily I wouldn't say it was too mild, would you?
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 8:56:47 PM)
Gypsy, are you doing okay?
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 8:56:57 PM)
yes thanks forglady
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 8:57:01 PM)
sorry froglady
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 8:57:12 PM)
lol Gypsy, that is okay
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 8:57:12 PM)
No, but you can not see any disability - I try hard to keep moving!
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 8:57:20 PM)
everthing is gettign harder but that pretty normal
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 8:57:36 PM)
you do well ahfh
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 8:57:43 PM)
It is a good thing to keep moving ahfh3 as long as you can
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 8:57:59 PM)
it just hard to get to chat at this time a lot of days
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 8:58:07 PM)
How disabled are you ladies?
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 8:58:08 PM)
I am 74 years old now and in a chair, but I can still stand with support
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 8:58:26 PM)
froglady you do amazingly well
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 8:58:42 PM)
I understand gypsy that it must be difficult, but I am happy you can come on whenever you can
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 8:59:07 PM)
I haven't been in the chair permanently for many years
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 8:59:10 PM)
i had lgmd not fshd but it affects the body similally ahfh
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 8:59:48 PM)
yes, my doc thought that might be it for me, but all signs seem to be FSHD
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 8:59:51 PM)
i still go pretty much everthing but things are getting harder i get tired easly can't walk far or lift of carry anything
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:00:01 PM)
do not go sorry
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:00:04 PM)
ahfh, tell me a little about yourself if you will. Are you married? do you have children? How are you coping?
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:00:33 PM)
the shoulder the face and the curvitrue of the spine seem to be the main differences
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:00:36 PM)
married 30 yrs, 3 boys 22,18,5 yrs. accident!!!
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:00:56 PM)
and the lower leges seems ot be more affected in fshd a lot use afo 's
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:01:02 PM)
LOL I should say, but you must consider him a miracle child
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:01:29 PM)
you do well to cope wtih a young child that would be very tireing
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:01:37 PM)
ahfh, are your boys okay?
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:01:43 PM)
yes!!! but a challenge at my age- are you DNA +?
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:02:01 PM)
Yes, I am
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:02:09 PM)
i have a rececvied form of lgmd
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:02:43 PM)
I have a son, a daughter and a grandson with FSH. So sad
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:03:04 PM)
Ahfh, where is Athena?
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:03:10 PM)
I hope & pray, but I have a "gut" feeling about my middle son-he is very athletic and does well, but has some characteristics I think
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:03:34 PM)
Athena is in Massachusetts-USA -where are you?
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:03:53 PM)
Sometimes those with FSH barely show it. My Mother was that way. She was only dx after I was
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:04:12 PM)
Ahfh, I am in Marana, AZ close to Tucson
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:04:37 PM)
Ahfh, are you on the FSH Register?
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:04:43 PM)
I think my mother had it too -she died from heart disease at 60 yrs. I do not know of other family members -strange!
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:05:16 PM)
yes, I think so
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:05:25 PM)
Not really ahfh, sometimes you are the first to get it
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:05:52 PM)
there is a 50% change with every child with fshd isn't there
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:05:56 PM)
The register is at Rochester, NY. That is pretty close to you, isn't it?
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:06:13 PM)
Yes, gypsy, that is correct
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:06:21 PM)
I also have retina prblems and high frequency hearing loss that is specific for FSHD -do you?
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:06:35 PM)
So do I ahfh
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:07:02 PM)
I am wearing hearing aids now and I have an annual appt with a retina specialist
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:07:26 PM)
that's what makes me "know" I have it -even with -DNA test -have you heard of anyone with -DNA test?
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:07:37 PM)
My twin sister had a really bad thing happen to one of her eyes. She had a hemmorhage and had to have surgery
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:08:19 PM)
Yes, ahth, several of our chatters have had the test as well as my sister and I
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:08:40 PM)
Oh no, I had Lasik surgery that did not do well and that is how my retina problem was discovered
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:08:42 PM)
I thought that was what you meant by DNA +
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:09:10 PM)
Ahfh, do they tell you to use tears faithfully
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:10:00 PM)
I have been using an expensive eye drop. I can't think of the name of it right now.
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:10:02 PM)
sorry about confusion - I had DNA blood test for 4q35 deletion that most FSHD's have -mine did not show chromosome deletions
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:10:40 PM)
I see ahfh. That does happen some of the time, but it doesn't mean you don't have it a lot of times
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:11:15 PM)
I use eye drops too in my left eye only - my vision is much worse in left
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:11:24 PM)
I was involved in FSH research at UMC in Rochester and I asked all kinds of questions and was given lots of material to read on it
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:12:02 PM)
ahfh, do you know anyone else who has FSH?
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:12:39 PM)
Gypsy, did you have a dna test for the LGMD?
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:12:53 PM)
I have done alot of research on my own , my Doc does not tell me much and is so busy! He is the MDA clinic Doc for my area-frustrating!
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:13:18 PM)
No, I know of no one else
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:13:32 PM)
I hear that a lot on this chat ahfh. My MDA doctor in Tucson is a genuinely neat guy and takes all the time I want
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:13:48 PM)
Can you raise your arms above your head?
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:14:17 PM)
no hanve't froglady they are only just becomminng avarliable here for lgmd and i don't have any need to know anyway
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:14:35 PM)
That and my inability to whistle is the first things that should have told a doctor I had FSH, but no one caught it for years
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:14:40 PM)
here is the best place to find out info ahfh
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:14:41 PM)
Great for you - I have even contacted Docs at Duke University in NC -they tell me to make an appt. I would love to be in a study or something
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:15:21 PM)
gypsy, that is the way with the rest of my family. They know well from being like me that they have it and a DNA test is very expensive. MDA does not pay for one
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:16:03 PM)
Ahfh, if you would like to be involved in a study contact Rochester and request to be part of one. That is what I did
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:16:06 PM)
i have learned for more for the chats than form any doctors ahfh
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:16:39 PM)
yes forglady i have no need to have a test but pretty sure now i have lgmd
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:16:46 PM)
I can put arms over head, but tire very quickly -never could whistle or throw ball -I knew in my teen years that I was "different". I have almost had to "convince" doctors That I have a problem.
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:17:05 PM)
infact i ralrey see a doctor at all been 6 years since i went to the clinic
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:17:46 PM)
I guess the only problem I see ahfh about being in a study is you must be definitely dx with FSH. You could tell them about the test and see if they would be interested in you as a part of a study
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:17:49 PM)
that seems to be the problem for most ahfh maybe don't don't know enought aobut md i went undx for many years
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:18:11 PM)
doctors
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:18:47 PM)
I have a pulmonary disease and I think that has made the FSH worse
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:19:39 PM)
So true! I have seen 2 other neurologists through the years and neither ever asked the right questions -whistling, arms over head, etc.
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:19:45 PM)
There is a research place in Mass. that works closely with Rochester. You might want to check that out
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:20:23 PM)
ahfh, do you get information from Rochester occasionally?
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:20:37 PM)
My MOM had really bad COPD & asthma
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:21:02 PM)
No info. from Rochester -maybe I need to.
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:21:21 PM)
They say lung disorders are not part of FSH. They also say heart is not involved, but my sister and I have both
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:22:06 PM)
both can be an issue with some types of lgmd so far i haven't had any problems
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:22:09 PM)
it makes you wonder, dosen't it - Do you know about FSH Watch newsletter?
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:22:10 PM)
If you do not receive info from Rochester, I would guess you are not enrolled. Maybe you could check that too. We need all the help we can get from wherever we can get it
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:22:40 PM)
Yes, ahfh, I do and it is a wonderful publication. That is a great group
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:23:06 PM)
They are doing more research on FSH than anyone else I believe, but I may be wronog
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:23:35 PM)
I recently got an e-mail from Johns-Hopkins about giving muscle tissue for research -I do not know how they got my name
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:24:26 PM)
That is interesting. They don't let out names from the registry, so I would suggest they may have got it from the MDA clinic
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:25:18 PM)
When there is a research trial, the registry sends the information to everyone and lets them make the contact with the organization if they are interested.
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:25:32 PM)
I have e-mailed the directors -Perez -mother & son -no response from them at FSH Watch
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:25:53 PM)
Do you get the FSH Watch?
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:26:47 PM)
I know the US gov't recently approved more $ for research -Wellstone- or something -i think the request for muscle tissue has to do with that -not really sure
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:27:41 PM)
I have seen the FSH Watch online a few times - I need to sign up for it and check about the Registry
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:28:01 PM)
They recently received a 9 million grant just for FSH. I am so hopeful something good will come of it
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:28:36 PM)
You are probably correct about that ahfh
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:28:56 PM)
So ahfh, you are not working at all now?
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:29:04 PM)
I saw a notice in FSH Watch (2007) saying to contact them if you tested negative for the 4q35 deletion -I did -no response
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:29:39 PM)
Interesting, just contact them and request a reply
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:30:44 PM)
Not teaching for 2 years -I taught 4 yr. kindergarten - I am doing some volunteer work at my son's school -my energy level is way down now - I wonder how I kept up for as long as I did -NO WAY could I teach now!
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:31:28 PM)
I recently received correspondence from the research doctor in Rochester stating that my sister and my participation in the study we were in had led to the doctors knowing more about what to include in future research
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:31:48 PM)
the tiredness is what get me the most i have no idea how everyone manages as i don't do anything
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:32:36 PM)
Wow - thats great -
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:32:55 PM)
gypsy, how old are you now?
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:33:29 PM)
That was a very rewarding thing to get to do. We had a good time besides and made friends with a lot of people at the hospital. They have this tunnel that leads to another research bldg across the street. It has one of those old elevators and the art students get to paint it any way they want to. It is called the psychodelevator
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:34:01 PM)
not very 40's ahfh
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:34:37 PM)
Gypsy, I think the fatigue is the worst part. You just can't do what you want to because you get so tired
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:35:11 PM)
And that makes you twitterpated
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:35:20 PM)
i been thining about it a lot lately forglady and i don't ever remember i a time when i wasn't tired
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:35:53 PM)
and no one can see it either i get sicko f being told how well i look and being put down for not doing enough
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:35:55 PM)
My daughter is beginning to get overly tired. She is still working so far
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:36:17 PM)
i am 49 -i have "progressed" as docs say in the past 2-3 years - I have alot of lower back hip, leg weakness & pain -I really thought I had some type Of LGMD at first
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:36:51 PM)
Someone came in my house on Christmas day and told me how well I looked. I just thought if he could feel the way I felt, he would know that was an incorrect assumption
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:37:31 PM)
But I just smiled:)
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:37:44 PM)
my progession has been quiet slow but its staring to affect me now
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:37:57 PM)
you are to polite froglady
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:38:12 PM)
i'm afraid i get sick of being told how well i look
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:38:13 PM)
LOL
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:38:27 PM)
Amen gypsy! People always tell me how good I look, etc... teachers at my son's school asked me a few months ago when he started Kindegarten if I was ready to come back to work -as if I had just taken some leisure time off the past few years! Sorry for whining -but...
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:38:37 PM)
that does sound a bit like lgmd ahfh
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:38:50 PM)
Might as well smile gypsy. At least it makes them feel good
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:39:19 PM)
i really only had problesm with my hips and legs till a few years ago
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:39:38 PM)
then my arms have gotten quiet bad and now i an having problems with my back too
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:40:03 PM)
Gypsy, I sometimes think you have FSH rather than LGMD
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:40:09 PM)
i don'tt hink there is any way to unnderstand the tired les you have it
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:40:28 PM)
pretty sure i have lgmd they are quiet simialr
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:40:44 PM)
Only 20% of those with FSH end up in a wheel chair
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:41:06 PM)
really think i am heading that way way to fast now
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:41:19 PM)
i think lgmd has more in chairs
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:41:25 PM)
And the progression is usually slow, but at times we take a huge step down, and illness of any kind can cause a progression
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:41:47 PM)
I have applied for SS disability - do you ladies get it? My attorney told me that it would be harder for me to get it because of my educational level -that I should be able to do a sit down job - I have to move alot-sitting is not comfrtable for very long
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:42:09 PM)
i get a pension but the whole systerm is quiet different here
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:42:17 PM)
Yes, ahfh,
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:42:51 PM)
Did you try to get SS prior to seeing an attorney?
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:43:02 PM)
seems you have a lot more troulbe getting support thougth things have changed a lot here to now i'm not sure i would get one if i applied now
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:43:41 PM)
I only had to send in an application and didn't even have to see a SS doc
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:44:05 PM)
I sent in information from my MDA doctor though
beckdildal (Dec 29, 2008 9:44:10 PM)
(This user has entered FSHD Chat)
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:44:22 PM)
i had very little troulbe to but that was 12 years ago now

froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:44:55 PM)
Beck, we have a new chatter tonight. ahfh
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:44:57 PM)

froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:45:13 PM)
Ic
beckdildal (Dec 29, 2008 9:45:13 PM)

gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:45:48 PM)
i would hardly say your is mild ahfh mine would be classed as that
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:46:00 PM)
Beck, notice that you have to hit "send message" for your message to appear. I don't know what happened to make it change from hitting the return key
gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:46:04 PM)
how are your parents beck ?
ahfh3 (Dec 29, 2008 9:46:15 PM)
Be right back - I have tp put my son to bed now Hello Beckdildal
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:46:28 PM)

gypsy (Dec 29, 2008 9:47:02 PM)
i try to avoid using mouse it hurts my arms too much
beckdildal (Dec 29, 2008 9:47:15 PM)
ok ah hurry back
froglady (Dec 29, 2008 9:47:25 PM)
Hmmm. last week was only wolflady and I on and we quit early because our messages would appear about 5 minutes after we hit the return key
beckdildal (Dec 29, 2008 9:47:48 PM)
maybe there was something going on with digichat last wk
