momma (Sep 18, 2008 8:39:42 PM)

eg (Sep 18, 2008 8:39:42 PM)
is R''s upper body elevated at night during the feeds?

anna (Sep 18, 2008 8:39:43 PM)
hasn't kept him from work

bayper (Sep 18, 2008 8:39:45 PM)
did he have the pain before

anna (Sep 18, 2008 8:40:02 PM)
no, this pain is associated with new feeding tube

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 8:40:15 PM)
is that normal initially

eg (Sep 18, 2008 8:40:31 PM)
it can be until they get use to it

bayper (Sep 18, 2008 8:40:39 PM)
what does he have right now?

anna (Sep 18, 2008 8:40:56 PM)
he will be ok. have?

bayper (Sep 18, 2008 8:41:00 PM)
is it the tube before the mickey

eg (Sep 18, 2008 8:41:07 PM)
anna did u see my ?

anna (Sep 18, 2008 8:41:08 PM)
yes, new tube

eg (Sep 18, 2008 8:41:14 PM)
about elevating upper body

eg (Sep 18, 2008 8:41:34 PM)
they have a long tube for few weeks then can get a mic key

anna (Sep 18, 2008 8:41:56 PM)
oh, sorry. he usually goes up and down in sleep all night, but tube is where he help remote so is fairly upright all night

anna (Sep 18, 2008 8:42:12 PM)
held remote on tummy

eg (Sep 18, 2008 8:42:17 PM)
yeah just make sure he is upright as flat can cause problems

bayper (Sep 18, 2008 8:42:24 PM)
I doubt the pain has anything to do with the feeds per say but that first tube caused my Matt some weird pains and they went away with the mickey was placed... when feeding his head needs to be elevated

anna (Sep 18, 2008 8:42:37 PM)
I hope they cut off the "tabs" tomorrow at dr

eg (Sep 18, 2008 8:43:16 PM)
maybe they will go away when mic key is placed

momma (Sep 18, 2008 8:43:19 PM)
see kent is way differant than most his is a pain ot has a long tube we deal with every day

eg (Sep 18, 2008 8:43:48 PM)
we hated that long tube

eg (Sep 18, 2008 8:43:54 PM)
but at least it was a temp

anna (Sep 18, 2008 8:43:55 PM)

momma (Sep 18, 2008 8:44:12 PM)

eg (Sep 18, 2008 8:44:56 PM)

eg (Sep 18, 2008 8:45:13 PM)
M was given a pouch we could use to roll up the tube a bit to conceal

anna (Sep 18, 2008 8:45:18 PM)
we made a "washer" to go next to skin to hold tube up a tiny bit

eg (Sep 18, 2008 8:45:33 PM)
think we used it during the day when he was not having feeds

anna (Sep 18, 2008 8:45:48 PM)

hi, first time checking in on a chat in a long time. So what are you chatting about tonight? My son is 9 with DMD. We live in Northern NJ. Not new to DMD -- 4 years. Very involved with PPMD but looking to chat again.

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 8:56:57 PM)
how is your son doing

pattimom (Sep 18, 2008 8:59:27 PM)
Pretty good. He just turned 9 in Aug. Plays lots of sports -- not the fastest but loves being on any team. Loves the Yankees. Has a lot of friends and is very outgoing. glad he has that kind of personality. Just started 3rd grade in town. This school is from 3 - 6 th grade. STAIRS! But they have a lift and a wing on one floor. They got him a scooter to use. We suggested the pride mobility go-go scooter that we already have and he is loving the attention from friends. Everyone in town is so supportive. Happy about that.

eg (Sep 18, 2008 9:00:03 PM)
glad all is well when was his bd?

He's a great boy. Has not idea of the progression of this beast. Has met other boys older in chairs but really hasn't made the connection or at least mentioned he has. We have a big group in NJ and we get together every few months . A real good group of folks.

eg (Sep 18, 2008 9:01:35 PM)
he got some new contemporary glasses to wear now

pattimom.. I have a 11 year old who is very outgoing and has many, many friends and he sees his 19 year old brother who is now on a vent and really does not make the connection either.. defensive mechanism maybe or

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:03:16 PM)
k

pattimom (Sep 18, 2008 9:03:20 PM)
We take him to Columbia Pres in NYC for the past four years but also took him to Cincinnati Childrens Hospital to see Dr. Wong. She is an expert on DMD and they are a center of excellence for DMD. Switched from pred. to deflazacort last NOvember due to weight gain and has not gained much in the past year.

pattimom (Sep 18, 2008 9:03:42 PM)
Interesting. Two boys -- you have quite a journey.

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:03:45 PM)
my son could not tolerate pred

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:04:32 PM)
i think sometimes they try to protect us

bayper (Sep 18, 2008 9:04:34 PM)
yes, a journey but one day at a time. I also have a 17 year old unaffected

momma (Sep 18, 2008 9:04:34 PM)
i have heard great things about your dr wong as we live in ohio

pattimom (Sep 18, 2008 9:04:41 PM)
my son was fine but gained way too much weight. It took about a year to really see the diff. Now he looks like a little linebacker.

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:05:22 PM)
my gut is stuck at four feet tall. friends are starting to tower over him but they are good to him

bayper (Sep 18, 2008 9:05:30 PM)
neither of my boys gained weight with prednisone... actually my 11 year old could use about 20 pounds

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:05:34 PM)
*guy

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:05:48 PM)
my son went nuts on it

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:06:47 PM)
i wonder what parents with dmdewrs in houston did or are doing

pattimom (Sep 18, 2008 9:07:03 PM)
She is so nice too. answers any e-mail on the spot. She was featured in the NY Times earlier this year. Anyone see it? Most of the NJ folks I know go out there. They are extremely thorough. Dexa Scans, bone age x-rays, cardiace MRI, everything. I leave there feeling very paid attention to. Great in NY but more of a focus on SMA and I leave there thinking I gave them more info. than they gave me. Cincinnnati was unbelievable. We go back in Dec.

pattimom (Sep 18, 2008 9:07:33 PM)
My son was like the wild man of borneo when he started on pred. First three months but then settled down. Was always a very agreeable little boy.

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:07:52 PM)
mine was always a hot head and it got so much worse

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:08:10 PM)
the minute we switched he snapped back to normal

momma (Sep 18, 2008 9:08:11 PM)
if kent was younger we would of went to cinn or even columbus

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:08:40 PM)
too far for us i do not care for our md doc but childrens has great docs for all the other stuff

pattimom (Sep 18, 2008 9:08:58 PM)
My son, Kevin, does have the impulsiveness thing in class too. Any of yours? He also says 'his mind tells him to say things that aren't nice but he tries to control it. Does a good job but "the thing in his mind" worries me.

pattimom (Sep 18, 2008 9:09:51 PM)
momma, where do you go?

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:09:55 PM)
um yes, mine is impulsive to say the least

momma (Sep 18, 2008 9:10:06 PM)
well toledo ohio

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:10:11 PM)
sometimes his teacher says he is more like first grader and he is in 6th

pattimom (Sep 18, 2008 9:10:54 PM)
right now kevin is pretty much like the rest though. Even the kids without DMD can be a little impulsive in 3rd grade.

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:10:56 PM)
maybe that is just his way of explaining doing stuff he isnt supposed to do

momma (Sep 18, 2008 9:10:56 PM)
but not to happy with it so we found other dr that were willing to help and do what kent needs and wants

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:11:09 PM)
thats kinda what we do too momma

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:11:27 PM)
wish there was more consistent care for md

pattimom (Sep 18, 2008 9:11:31 PM)
It's a shame so many docs really don't have a clue about DMD, even at MDA clinics.

momma (Sep 18, 2008 9:11:57 PM)
i agree patti

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:11:58 PM)
ours told us go home and enjoy himn cuz he will only live into late teens

momma (Sep 18, 2008 9:12:21 PM)
pretty much same here but lok kents 22 !

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:12:25 PM)
i should ahve our older boys e-mail her

pattimom (Sep 18, 2008 9:12:30 PM)
Standards of care are being worked on. Dr. wong is setting the standard of care and few other hospitals are replicating her. CHOP (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia), Boston, a few others.

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:12:48 PM)
tell her to call the clinic in omaha

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:13:01 PM)
most dmd parents go out of state here

pattimom (Sep 18, 2008 9:13:06 PM)
Twinglema, Unacceptable for them to tell you that. They are not with it and should not be treating DMD.

momma (Sep 18, 2008 9:13:15 PM)
i cant see dr here follow ant standard of care they egos are way to fat!

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:13:18 PM)
oh, i know

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:13:38 PM)
i called ppmd the moment we got home

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:14:08 PM)
she also still insists there is not diff between pred and deflaz

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:14:36 PM)
ppmd put me in touch with dr bigger and we did what he said

pattimom (Sep 18, 2008 9:16:16 PM)
Every year we go to the PPMD conference -- this year in Philly. Our fourth. Absolutely could not live without that conf. Hundreds of DMD parents, all the researchers, PT's, Nutritionist, school specialists, Dr. Wong and Dr. Biggar (wonderful, have spoken with him) all there. It's a four-day conf. -- exhausting but fantastic. PPMD has a teacher's guide and Gym teacher's guide which I give to teachers.

momma (Sep 18, 2008 9:16:25 PM)
i thought mda clinics would have a pulmonary dr and cardiac dr but i was told the hospital wasnt big enough for all thier egos!

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:16:38 PM)
i do that too

pattimom (Sep 18, 2008 9:16:46 PM)
Pred. and Deflaz do the same but deflaz has less side effects, especially weight gain.

momma (Sep 18, 2008 9:16:58 PM)
that came from a nurse at clinic!

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:17:03 PM)
some clinics have them all but ours only has neuro, pt, ot

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:17:23 PM)
doc hetre thinks side effects are sme

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:17:26 PM)
same

pattimom (Sep 18, 2008 9:17:34 PM)
Columbia Pres. in NYC has given him PFT and ekg and echo. but not up on everything. And we are talking NYC. People come from all over the world to Columbia

momma (Sep 18, 2008 9:18:34 PM)
here it like the have a standard and dont go outside the box afarid to learn something new i guess

pattimom (Sep 18, 2008 9:19:02 PM)
Has anyone gone to D.C. Have gone two years in a row with PPMD and we saw all our reps. Really pushing the MDCARe act resinstatement and having success. Ryan Lochte, the olympic swimmer just went to D.C. to push for this. He has a relative that died from DMD.

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:19:55 PM)
i have not

pattimom (Sep 18, 2008 9:20:52 PM)
My case of DMD is hereditary but we did not know that. My mom had a brother that died in 1944 and she always said polio or 'progressive paralysis' . They were poor immigrants from Ireland and he spent most of his life in a hospital. I feel so bad. Had Kevin at 44 and I am an only child, hence my mom just passed on the defective gene to me. Maybe if she had a son, we woud have known more. Kevin is our only child.

pattimom (Sep 18, 2008 9:21:17 PM)
I get a lot of satisfaction from my involvement with so many others. It helps a lot. Anyone in NJ/NY area?

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:21:42 PM)
we do not know if it started before me or not. no one else has had it but there were very few men born in our family

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:21:53 PM)

twinglema (Sep 18, 2008 9:24:53 PM)

pattimom (Sep 18, 2008 9:25:14 PM)
Unfortunately, I am going to have to sign off. Got home from back to school night and have not gotten my son to bed. Very bad. got on here instead. I used to go up to the adir0ondacks in the 70s with an old boyfriendl. His uncle had a cabin up at Inlet and now he owns the place I hear. Beautiful up there.

It's really great for parents on a grass roots level. it was 75 here today. Nice Indian summer here to. Sunday it was 90 and hot aat my son's soccer game. As you can see, I talk (type) a lot. Thank God I type fast.
