Congressional Gold Medal for Jerry Lewis
Call To Action
We are encouraging people to contact their local representatives and urge them to sign on to HR 3035 and S. 1603.
Please contact the two senators for your state and the congressman for your local district. The following information is provided as a tool to help make this as convenient as possible for you.
To Reach Out by Phone:
- Go to www.congress.org
- On the top left of the screen "My Elected Officials," enter your zip code.
- The next screen will list your state representatives for your local area (as determined by your zip code).
- Click on the names of each of the individuals you are contacting (2 Senators and 1 Representative).
- Contact information for those individuals will appear. You may call either their local office or their D.C. office.
When contacting your elected officials by phone, the following are sample scripts that may be used during your calls:
Script for Phone Calls to Senators:
“Hello, this is _________. I am calling from ... (Your State) and would like to speak with the Senator’s Health staff person.
(Note: If the health staffer is not available, you may speak with any staffer available. If no one is available, please ask to leave a voicemail message for the health staff person.)
I am calling to urge you to support S. 1603, the bill awarding a Congressional Gold Medal to Jerry Lewis in recognition of his outstanding service to the nation.
(Note: Please share something about yourself and why this issue is important to you.)
There’s no one in the U.S. who has done more than Jerry Lewis to bring attention to the need to cure muscular dystrophy and other rare muscle diseases. He’s stood up for adults and children affected by these diseases for more than four decades. As national chairman of the Muscular Dystrophy Association – a job for which he receives no pay – he’s helped raise more than $2 billion for research, medical care, summer camps, education and other services. Even though he’s now 82 and battling his own health problems, he continues to host the MDA Labor Day Telethon every year. Jerry Lewis truly is an exemplary American hero.
Can I count on the Senator’s support of Senate Bill 1603?
(Note: Most likely, the person you are speaking to will not be able to commit to supporting the bill, but he/she can commit to learning more about it and speaking with the Senator about the issue.)
Thank you for your time.”
